The Next Four Years

I grew up in a solid blue area of the country and many of my high school classmates who still live in Connecticut support a progressive-liberal political agenda. I have voted in a total of 12 presidential elections and during that 44-year timeframe (1980-2024) have been a Democrat, Republican, Independent, Republican again, and am now permanently an unaffiliated Independent. Why so? The bottom line is tribalism and extreme political partisanship and positions. It is clear to many that extremism has penetrated deeply into both political parties in attitudes, agendas, engagement with other party members, policy positions, and even content of character, which was previously held to a certain standard of discourse. Agendas are now often completely corrupted by power politics.

If you know God’s Word, you understand this is the way that Satan wants it. My choice of no party affiliation is emblematic of giving Satan the middle finger, not someone who is not in the same political party or belief system that I hold dear. It is empowering not to have to comply with a misguided group, it keeps me above the fray, and it confirms my complete trust in God and the doctrine of the Bible found in Romans 13.

My position on politics enriches my spiritual life regardless of the outcome because I know He is the one who appoints those in authority. It’s a beautiful thing to fully rely upon God and just wait to be amazed at what He might be doing whether the result is my choice or another outcome. Regardless of whether God’s choice results in increasing peace and prosperity, or depression and outright anarchy, my spirit is at peace. God’s direction is always better than mine whether my flawed thinking is congruent with His direction or not. This is the essence of understanding the sovereignty of God and trusting in Him.
